Our solution to the math challenge

We continued this chart until the 10th term. We found out a expression which is: n (n) + n = x
(n = open lockers)
(x = closed lockers)
But the question says to find how many lockers are open after the 1000th student enters the school.

We can't seem to find the correct answer with this expression. The closest we got was when n=31
Do you have another formula to solve this problem?

At a Secondary School, there are 1000 students and 1000 lockers (cupboards for students to store their books). The caretaker has made sure that all the lockers are shut for the beginning of school. The students decided to play a practical joke on the principal. The first student that enters the school opens every locker. The second student that enters closes every other locker. The third student opens or closes every third locker, the fourth student will open or close every fourth locker and so on... After every student has entered the building, how many lockers will remain open? How can you represent your answer algebraically?

Our school is called Albion Heights. We have over 500 kids going to our school. Mr. Abdi (principal) and Mrs. Lyons (vice Principal) are the head leaders of our school. Our school is in Toronto, Canada and Ontario. Our school starts at kindergarten and ends at grade 8.
