Math challenge for standard 7 & 8

At our school, some of our top math students are invited to participate in a Math Olympics. We are challenging some of your students to solve this math puzzle. Our Math Olympics students will post their solutions. Can you post a solution first?

At a Secondary School, there are 1000 students and 1000 lockers (cupboards for students to store their books). The caretaker has made sure that all the lockers are shut for the beginning of school. The students decided to play a practical joke on the principal. The first student that enters the school opens every locker. The second student that enters closes every other locker. The third student opens or closes every third locker, the fourth student will open or close every fourth locker and so on... After every student has entered the building, how many lockers will remain open? How can you represent your answer algebraically?
